Mission Statement: My classroom is a place where students should feel welcome: everyone should feel free to learn and participate without worrying about put-downs
or soul-crushing gossip.

HOUSEKEEPING:


1.  Please  sign the report card envelope and return it with your child.  I'm only missing a couple of them.



2.  Holiday Heroes initiative is underway: please send any new hats/mitts/coats or unwrapped toys to school and we will place them under the tree.  As well, if you wish to donate gift cards to teens in need you can also do that (we will give them to the office to hold for safekeeping). 


3. Students who received photo re-dos were given their proofs today and they are to be returned by (or ordered online by) December 6.

:      Jennifer, Mikayla, Aidan, Carter, and Kaitlin: these 5 students were recognized today for improvement and continued responsibility.  Well done!

1.  NoRedInk: the next tasks are due next Wednesday (December 6).  It will take about an hour to do these tasks (notice "tasks" is plural), so start tonight!




MATH:



1.  Grade 8: 7.3 (on UTS).  The other two sheets I gave today are NOT homework.


2. Grade 7: make a small sketch of something that could be used for the tessellations project.  Start with a square or a hexagon and then "blur" the lines.  What could it look like?

1.  A test on Residential schools is Wednesday (it will be a one-paragraph response to 1 question).  Look at your notes, the timeline in the class, watch the Chanie Wenjack video, and even visit this site: http://wherearethechildren.ca/en/exhibition.  Here are some questions that came up from today's discussion: Where are the First Nations people now (in the context of Residential Schools) 2. Why is there still not enough action to rectify the problem?  3. What can Canadians do to help First Nations peoples deal with the aftermath of the residential school system?  4. What impact did the residential schools have on the First Nations community? 5. What was the purpose of the residential schools?

1.  The Skilled Presentation Quiz is up and running on Google Classroom.  You have until Sunday night to respond.  Read each question carefully and then respond..


2. The presentations thus far have been terrific: one student even brought graphs to represent her growth in literacy!


3. If you have some spare wrapping paper at home it would be most appreciated if you brought it in on Monday.  We will be setting up the tree for the "Holiday Heroes" display, and our class will be wrapping up large boxes to house the donations.


4. Wednesday will be the end of our first week with the 8-box novel reading.  This means you should have the first 1/3 of the book done.  Be sure to keep up with the in-class reading, and if you need additional time at home, do it this weekend.


5. We will be presenting the drama/history photos this Thursday.  Check with your group mates to ensure you are ready to rock.


6. No Red Ink: new set of subtasks due Wednesday.  The first is using FANBOYS (coordinating conjunctions) and the second is detecting common errors with homophones.


7.  Still waiting for some grade 7 Math work: the equilateral triangle story.  OA, JP, and KW (was absent)

2. Grade 7: 7.2 on the UTS.  Before you try the homework, watch the flipped learning video: "7 Math Geometry 7 2 Congruent Shapes" on Math of the Titans


3. The rubric for their Math notebook (for the measurement unit) came home this week.  Check it over with your child: there is a very strong correlation between homework completion and success in Math.

Make up a story about a beautiful equliateral triangle. Be sure to include as many geometric terms as you can! Include puns, similes, metaphors, hyperboles...

Just a couple of notes for the weekend that I forgot yesterday:


1. Thank you to all the parents/guardians who sent in non-perishable food items for our Fun/fundraiser.  I left school late, and knowing I wouldn't get to the food bank in time, the provisions are still at school.  If your child forgot to bring something and would still like to make a donation, it can come on Monday.


2. NoRedInk: Kudos to the following students who have already mastered the first set of subtasks: Aimee and Owen. Well done!  The rest of you - get on it!

: Today's winners for today's art challenge: Jessica (1), Kaitlin (2), Danny (3), Ianna and Karen (4th), and Raymond (5), Jamie (6), Derese (7), Denys (8) and Kian (9).  Thanks to the Le Moine artists being so successful (and then also adding massive points through Win, Lose, or Draw), we successfully defended the trophy.  As Mobin said, "The trophy will collect dust because it's going to be in our class all year".  Finally, thanks to: Karen, Alex, Betty, Aidan, Chelsea, Robbie, Luke and Ethan for helping clean up the mess after the art contest.

: Denys: on Friday, while discussing the residential schools in History class, I mentioned that as a kid, I never learned about this topic - even though it was still happening.  Denys put up his hand and said: "So, is it possible that there is something just as terrible happening right now and we don't even know about it?"  That kind of worldly thinking is terrific.  Kudos, Denys.
